Above is the official logo for what will be the celebration of 200 years since the first official emigration of Norwegians to North America. It beautifully depicts the fact that emigrants have gone back and forth between Norway and North America over this period, with long-lasting influences on both sides, certainly something to mark and celebrate!
On September 6, five CNS members, along with two representatives of the Norwegian Association of Montreal, met with the Director of the Norwegian Emigrant Museum, Professor Terje Hasle Joranger (pictured above, fifth from right) and Norwegian diplomats, at the residence of the Norwegian Ambassador.
The purpose of the meeting was to introduce and discuss the 2025 “Crossings 200” celebration project. Professor Joranger will be travelling throughout North America to meet with representatives of various Norwegian associations to plan events in this regard.
The general consensus was that Norwegian associations in Canada would like to work together to create their own Canadian ways of celebrating this landmark anniversary, rather than joining up with the American organizations. The Canadian Nordic Society in Ottawa does, of course, include Norwegians in its purview and is planning to get involved in this endeavour. We will keep you informed of developments as we liaise with other Canadian organizations and move forward with this exciting project.
