Marc Denhoz’s witty and highly entertaining talk on September 22, entitled "The 1,000 Year Connection between Canada and the Nordic countries", turned out to be the ideal opener for our 2026-27 season. After all, that connection is what the Canadian Nordic Society is all about!

Beginning with an eye-opening litany of English words of Norse origins, he covered everything from the sisu (roughly translated from Finnish as “fortitude") Nordics and Canadians of necessity must share to tackle our challenging climates, to our approaches to international politics, to our love of hockey, and our relatively low-key and genial comportment as individuals. He then launched into an informative and hilarious account of Nordic history in Canada from the time of the Vikings onwards. I particularly enjoyed his portrayal of the Vikings as businessmen looking for potential real estate development. It seemed to bring them to life as being not so different from people today!

Marc had also prepared a very clever slide show to go along with his talk, including the humorous slide below, illustrating Canada apparently preparing to defend its border against any hostile takeovers. Thank you to Vibeke Reid for this photo, as well as the one above!
