Message from our President

Hello Everyone, I hope you have all had a good summer!

First, I wish to thank past President, Constantine Ioannou and the previous Council for its fine work and for a smooth transition. Your new Council has hit the ground running, starting as early as May 24th, with a meeting with the Nordic Council, a group that advises governments on polices impacting Nordic countries, which is based in Copenhagen. This is the kind of out- reach that we wish to build upon.

On June 6th, a number of CNS members were delighted to attend the Danish Constitution Day and the farewell to Ambassador Hanne Fugl Eskjær.

St. Hans or Johannus was a great success once again, thanks especially to organizers Costa Kapsalis, Tim Mark, and Hilde Huus, our wonderful hosts D’Arcy and Nancy Thorpe, the various musical contributors, and all of you who participated!

Your new Council had its first full meeting in July and has been hard at work planning the fall program. We are happy to inform you that we have two excellent speakers lined up for our Distinguished Speakers series to start off the year. On September 18th, we will be addressed by Lieutenant Commander Kim Poirrier, who has an intriguing personal and career story to tell and is our new sponsor at the Mess! On October 9th, Terry West, the author of A Time to Disappear, a fascinating Finnish mystery story set in northern Ontario, will address us.

We are hoping to greet the new ambassadors of Denmark, Finland and Norway in the next few months.

The Mess will be undergoing some renovations in December and January, and this may affect the location of our Christmas Luncheon scheduled for December 2nd. Council is working on a solution to this and will address this matter at its next meeting on September 10th. You will be kept informed of any changes.

Council will be meeting with Professor Terje Joranger of the Inland University at the Royal Norwegian Embassy on September 6th to discuss Crossings 200, commemorating 200 years of emigration from Norway to Canada and the United States. We will discuss how CNS might play a role in this international celebration.

Our next luncheon is on Monday, September 9th, and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible then!

With all best wishes,

Trygve
